Tips for the festive season

  • Apply the 80:20 - eating healthily 80% of the time allows space for delicious treats on special occasions.

  • Stay Hydrated - make a conscious effort to drink 6-8 glasses of water, even mild hydration can lead to headaches.  Consuming additional alcohol over the holidays can add to dehydration. A sparkling water with lime can hit the spot!

  • Portion control - be conscious of this, it’s often the biggest problem over the festive season, it is almost expected of us to overeat until we are in pain!

  • Be prepared with healthy, fresh foods available - grilling and barbecuing are healthy cooking options.  Have some in season stone fruits, berries and salads on hand so you’re not tempted for packet, processed or deep fried foods.

  • Stay active - include some additional exercise during the holiday period, use it as a great opportunity to do some fun activities like a walk around the neighbourhood to look at Christmas displays, backyard cricket, a swim, kayak, bike ride or dance the night away.

  • Get enough sleep - although it’s a busy time, try not to burn the candle at both ends, not getting enough sleep will have you reaching for sugar and carbs due to low energy.

  • Relax and enjoy - eat slowly, enjoy and savour every mouthful of your favourite foods.  Ditch the food guilt, start a fresh at every meal and day.  Most importantly, take time out for yourself, relax and enjoy the time with family and friends.
