What Do We Mean By 'Holistic'?

When you hear health advice being described as "holistic”, do you think of Chiropractic, massage therapy, essential oils, naturopathy, or traditional Chinese medicine? If so, you’re on the right track.

Holistic health focuses on wellness and prevention, rather than just treating a disease or a specific body part. And prevention is achieved by raising awareness about factors or situations that may be harming a person’s health.

It is a comprehensive and individual approach that honours the mind-body connection. Holistic health assesses the whole person and makes recommendations based on their physical, mental, social, and spiritual wellbeing.

Holistic care seeks to treat the person rather than the pain. A holistic health care provider won’t just ask you about your symptoms, because that know symptoms do not paint a full enough picture. They need to know all about you, your health and your lifestyle, to make accurate and personal recommendations to improve your overall wellness.

“Holism holds that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”; makes sense, doesn’t it?

The main takeaway from the whole-body approach is to be proactive. Don’t wait until you’re sick to start taking better care of yourself.

A strong immune system is the first line of defence against illness. Stress, pollutants, nutrient-deficient food, lack of movement; all these things can weaken the immune system are increase our likelihood of getting sick.
